Pygmy Hedgehog Names?

In the organized hedgehog community (see the web sites cited)(also the Yahoogroups hedgehog_help list-server), it is often said that a hedgehog will name her/himself if you get to know and closely observe the hedgehog. Of course, there are always the "Smith and Jones" hedgehog names like Sonic, Spike, Prickles, etc.. In caring for over 315 hedgehogs for 15 years now, we've seen some very unusual names, some of which we thought unpronounceable until we got used to them, especially some of the African names (they are, after all, African hedgehogs), such as Vula indlela, Izigqi, Thembekele, Ukuqambe, Ukuphana, and Mbiza. Names have run the gamut from very short (as in Io, after the Jupiter moon) to Tadeusz Drozdowski (love those long Polish names). Many Czech names have wonderful meanings - Branislava (glorious protector), Otilie (fortunate heroine), Bohumila (favored by god). One of our rescue hedgehogs took on the name "Critical Bill" after he was abandoned and mistaken for a bomb on a school playground (see his page on our web site). Archilochus was named after that ancient poet that came up with that famous fragment about the hedgehog and the fox. Hedgehogs that come into our rescue keep the names they arrive with unless they are too common or obnoxious. Unnamed arrivals either pick their own name or are named by the senior hedgehog here. Other interesting names here have been Anatefka Pogstein, Tokelossie, Pedro, Zelda, Bleecker, Hoskins, Waylon, Fred and Wilma, Zoltan, Varkie, El Diablo, Mai Fara'a, Orbit the Spy, Otis, Twinkie and Doughnut (sisters), The Wingman, Bozeman, Major General Spikers - and the list goes on and on. Best wishes, Z. G. Standing Bear at The Flash and Thelma Memorial Hedgehog Rescue, Inc., in Divide, Colorado USA
